Darmstadt lies within the federal state of Hesse right in the heart of central Europe. It covers the southern part of the Rhine-Main area and borders the Odenwald as well as the Mountain Road (Bergstraße). Darmstadt is situated nearby the rivers Rhine, Main and Neckar.
